(Brussels c. 1695–1778 Paris)
A Bacchanal, en grisaille, signed F Eisen Le pére, oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm, framed,
Provenance: Collection Count Ulric Scheffer, envoy of King Gustav III of Sweden (label on the reverse); Galerie Birtschansky, Paris (1946).
François Eisen, who was trained in Valenciennes, moved to Paris in 1745, where he founded, together with his son Charles, a highly successful workshop. Their elegant genre scenes, which were created in a Flemish manner, enjoyed great popularity. Our painting entered the collection of Count Scheffer, who represented the Stockholm court at Versailles. The high quality of his collection, a major part of which forms the basis of today’s National Museum in Stockholm, corroborates the high standing of our artist.
